The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been intensifying its efforts to boost tax revenue collection through initiating proper action plan and giving specific guidelines to the tax officials.
NBR Chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid will sit with taxmen on Saturday (November 10) to explain the initiatives about gearing up revenue mobilisation.
Commissioners of all the tax collecting wings including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, Barisal, Large Tax Unit (LTU), Central Intelligence Cell (CIC), and central tax survey zone will attend the meeting.
Mazid has already visited several tax offices and customs houses across the country after taking charge of the board.
The NBR will opt for short-term and long-term measures to increase revenue collection and enhance efficiency of the board.
The government has set an income tax collection target of about Tk 108.38 billion for the fiscal 2007-08, up by 21.45 per cent than that of the revised target of the last fiscal.
The income tax collection target in the original budget for last fiscal was set at Tk 85 billion, but it was later revised to Tk 89.24 billion.
NBR insiders said the taxmen will try to surpass its target every month to avoid chances of revenue shortfall at the end of the fiscal.
The NBR is not willing to go for examining tax files if it could surpass target for collecting tax revenue, they said.
In the current fiscal budget, the government has cut the discretionary auditing power of taxmen.
The government has set the total tax revenue collection target of Tk 438.50 billion for the fiscal 2007-08, representing a 17 per cent increase over that of the revised target of Tk 374.79 billion in the fiscal 2006-07.
The tax revenue target was Tk 410.55 billion in the original budget for the fiscal 2006-07, which was revised to Tk 374.79 billion later.
Sources said the tax revenue collection substantially increased in the immediate past fiscal following NBR's crackdown on tax evaders, and the trend is expected to continue during the current financial year.
In July-September 2007-08, tax revenue collection was recorded at Tk 93.01 billion against the target of Tk 90.51 billion.
The NBR collected Tk 16.35 billion, posting a 21.33 per cent growth over that of the corresponding period of previous fiscal.
The board's ongoing survey on existing business outlets and organisations for raising number of taxpayers also contributed to the generation of awareness among the people about the payment of tax, sources said.
