FE Report
The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) welcomed Monday the outcome of two events during the last seven days. The events, according tot he MCCI, are: (1) the business community's dialogue on business environment with the Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government and the Army Chief and (2) the visit of Dr. Craig R. Barrett, Chairman of Intel Corporation.
In a statement issued to the press, it expected that the two events would prove to be of great significance to the national economy.
"The assurances of the Chief Adviser and the Army Chief were timely and extremely convincing. The Chief Adviser's announcement for formation of Bangladesh Better Business Forum to be chaired by the Chief Adviser and conducting of a Quarterly Survey On Business Confidence in the country will have a lasting favourable impact on the economy", it stated.
The chamber expressed the hope that urgent measures would be taken to ensure implementation of the Chief Adviser's two proposals on a priority basis. "The private sector has long been termed as the engine of economic growth but in spite of concerted efforts, the various measures, which needed to be taken for initiation of this process, were not taken. Implementation of the Chief Adviser's proposals, the MCCI feels, will help the private sector achieve the desired role. The three-monthly survey on business confidence can be of great help to monitor and evaluate policy coordination and their implementation", it said.
"On the other hand, the visit of Dr. Craig Barrett, Intel Chairman will prove to be a significant milestone for developing the ICT sector in the country. Dr. Barrett's visit will put Bangladesh firmly on the ICT map and given the requisite policy support by the Government, can attract significant investments in computer hard-ware and soft-ware manufacturing, which can provide employment opportunities to hundreds of thousands of job seekers", the MCCI stated in its statement to the press.
