FBCCI president Mir Nasir Hossain Saturday assured the apex trade body's AGM that the present executive committee would not continue office any longer after the extended tenure that expires on December 6 (Thursday).
He made the announcement amid widespread criticism that the present Board of Directors having failed to protect the interest of the business community was trying to continue the office through unfair means, members attending the meeting told UNB.
DCCI director Syed Moazzem Hossain told reporters after the AGM that the general body members during open discussion at the Annual General Meeting 2006-07 even threatened to enact another 1/11 in the FBCCI unless the present Board discontinues the office.
They would accept even an administrator deputed by the Government to hold an election to the Board of Directors, he said.
However, a FBCCI statement said the general body members sought "early and direct election of FBCCI and did not want any administrator."
The extended tenure of the present Board of Directors expires on Thursday. The Ministry of Commerce in an order extended the tenure of the Board by three months from September 5 to hold a fair election to the board.
The general body members at the AGM pointed out that the Board completely failed to perform its role when the business community had to face harassment in the recent past.
Most of around 300 members who attended the meeting sought a new Board of Directors through early and direct election while none of them defended the present Board to continue, members said.
"There were divided opinions - to extend the tenure of the present Board and not to extend the tenure," FBCCI president Mir Nasir told reporters after the meeting.
He chaired the meeting held at the FBCCI conference centre with first vice president Mohammad Ali, vice-president Dewan Sultan Ahmed, directors, heads of member bodies and the general body members present.
