Mir Shawkat passes away

Lt Gen (retd) Mir Shawkat Ali, Bir Uttam, one of the Sector Commanders of Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, died at his Gulshan residence Saturday evening. He was 72.
A former minister of the BNP government, Gen Shawkat, who had been suffering from cancer and kidney ailments, breathed his last at about 6:30 pm, family sources said, reports UNB.
He left behind his wife, three daughters now living in London, and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.
Gen Shawkat became inactive in party politics after the last national council of BNP held in December 2009, according to the party sources.
A valiant freedom fighter, Shawkat was elected Member of Parliament twice from Dhaka on BNP ticket.
He was made Food Minister during the BNP government (1991-96). He was also vice-chairman of the BNP's national executive committee and convenor of Dhaka city BNP.
On receiving his death news in the evening, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia rushed to the house of late Gen Shawkat.
