Mobarak Hossain, the first-ever union-level ruling Awami League leader of Brahmanbaria, was on Monday awarded death penalty for perpetrating crimes against humanity, especially genocide, during the Liberation War 43 years ago, reports UNB.
With the 64-year-old war criminal in the dock, Justice Enayetur Rahim, chairman of the three-member tribunal, flanked by two other members-Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Anwarul Haque- pronounced its sixth verdict at 12:07 pm in a crowded courtroom amid tight security, 75 weeks after closing the arguments from both sides.
"The convict will be hanged by neck till he is dead," declared Justice Rahim, stating that the sentences and convictions were unanimous.
The summary of the 92-page judgment was read out by the tribunal judges in phases for 45 minutes that began at 11:23 am.
Emerging from the tribunal, designated prosecutor Shahidur Rahman expressed his satisfaction over the judgment while defence counsel Tajul Islam said his client did not get justice and will move the Supreme Court for appeal against the ICT-1 judgment.
The tribunal sentenced Mobarak, the I971 commander of Razakar, an auxiliary force of the Pakistan occupation army, the capital punishment on war crimes charges of abduction, confinement, torture and conspiracy killing 33 freedom-loving unarmed civilians after taking them to the west bank of Ganga Sagor Dighi.
The judgment observed such criminal acts of Mobarak as shocking to the conscience of mankind.
