Mobile Internet service back to normal

FE Report | December 31, 2018 00:00:00

Mobile Internet was restored across the country on Sunday evening, about 18 hours after the service was suspended.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) instructed the mobile operators to restore data services, including 2G, 3G and 4G, at around 6:00pm on Sunday.

The instruction came two hours after the voting in the 11th parliamentary elections ended.

Mobile Internet was actually slow across the country since Saturday afternoon after the BTRC asked the operators to shut down 3G and 4G services.

However, 2G service was out of the purview of this restriction.

But later, the telecom regulator asked the operators to shut down the 2G services as well.

Consequently, mobile Internet was completely unavailable from Sunday midnight.

The decision to restrict mobile Internet was taken during a meeting between the Election Commission and BTRC.

According to officials concerned, the move was aimed at preventing the spread of rumors during the election.

At present, there are 91.8 million Internet subscribers in the country. Of them, around 86 million use mobile Internet.
