Modi says govt working on LBA, Teesta issues

NEW DELHI, Dec 19 (UNB): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that his government had been working to resolve the long-pending Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) and Teesta water sharing deal with Bangladesh.

His reissuance came at a meeting with Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid at Hyderabad House.

During the 30-minute meeting, President Hamid expressed the hope that the two crucial issues would be resolved under Modi's leadership, President's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told the news agency after the meeting.

Praising India's cooperation in Bangladesh's power sector, Hamid said: "We need more support in this sector."

He also sought India's cooperation in importing hydroelectricity from Nepal and Bhutan by Bangladesh, and underscored the need for improving connectivity for development of the region, while Modi emphasised infrastructural development in this regard.

The President lauded Modi's leadership and his Gujrat model saying the young generation was being attracted by leadership.

During his meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, President Abdul Hamid sought more cooperation from the neighbouring country in the power sector to meet its growing electricity demand.

President's press secretary Ihsanul Karim told the news agency that Abdul Hamid appreciated Indian cooperation in the power sector saying Bangladesh expects more support in this regard as the demand for electricity in the country is rising fast.
