Mohiuddin brought to Dhaka, sent to jail

Bangabandhu assassination convict AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed landed in the Dhaka Central Jail at 2:16 pm Monday after he was taken to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court at 1:40 pm, reports bdnews24.com.
Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Major Shamsul Haider Siddiqui received him at the jail.
A Thai Airways flight flew Mohiuddin in to Zia International Airport (ZIA) at 12:15pm.
Khandakar Rafiqul Islam, a deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the news agency at 12:54 pm that the immigration police arrested him upon his arrival at the ZIA.
Mohiuddin was deported by the US after he lost his appeal to the US Federal Court Thursday not to deport him to Bangladesh, acting foreign secretary Towhid Hossain was quoted as saying by BBC Radio Friday.
Meanwhile, Law Adviser Mainul Hosein Monday said Bangabandhu murder convict AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed can appeal against his conviction if the Appellate Division accepts it.
"Mohiuddin is a convict. He will stay in jail. If the Appellate Division accepts, he can appeal against his conviction like other accused," Mainul told reporters in his Law Ministry office.
A court sent the former major to Dhaka Central Jail Monday after he was deported to Bangladesh from the US.
Mainul said the law will take its own course and the government had nothing to do with it.
Asked whether a new bench will be constituted, Mainul said, "It's up to the court. The court will look into it."
The Law Ministry will assist the court if necessary, he said.
Asked to confirm if the government would take further steps to bring back other convicts of the Bangabandhu Murder Case from abroad, the adviser said the caretaker government had been installed for a short time and it was working to fulfil the expectations of people.
"The government has many more important things to do," he said.
"However if any environment is created for bringing back other convicts, the government must take action," he said.
