A lawcourt now orders freezing 31 more bank accounts of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul and her sister Sheikh Rehana and their related organisations over corruption allegations.
They deposited Tk 3.94 billion in these bank accounts, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said in its petition submitted Tuesday to the Dhaka court for ordering freeze on the accounts of the immediate-past ruling family.
Judge of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court, Dhaka, Md Zakir Hossain passed the order after hearing the ACC petition, now that a crackdown on graft is ongoing following the August-5th uprising that toppled the Hasina government.
Earlier in the day, ACC Deputy Director and head of the enquiry team Md Monirul Islam submitted the application to the court for seizure orders.
In the application, the ACC said, "Hasina and others are trying to transfer the money from these accounts. So, an order is needed to prevent them from doing so."
Earlier on March 11, the same court ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission to freeze a total of 124 bank accounts owned by Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and seven of their family members and their related organisations.
The same Dhaka court also ordered on the day the ACC to freeze 163 bank accounts of journalist and also former press secretary to Sheikh Hasina Nayeemul Islam Khan, his wife Nasima Khan Monty and their children Labiba Nayeem Khan, Adibha Nayeem Khan and Jhulika Nayeem Khan and organisations related to them.
According to the ACC petition, in these accounts Tk 3.85 billion was deposited, Tk 3.79 billion withdrawn and now balance is Tk 62.5 million.
