More rivers overflow to worsen flood

The overall flood situation in the country may deteriorate further in the 24 hours until 6:00 am Saturday, according to a bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) Friday, report agencies.
The FFWC bulletin said the water levels of Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Padma and Surma rivers might rise at various points during the period. These rivers are also likely to flow above danger levels at most of the places.
"The prevailing flash flood situation in the north-eastern part of the country is deteriorating," it said.
Most of the rivers and river basins recorded rising water levels at various points during the 24 hours until Friday morning.
The Teesta was flowing 25 cm above the danger mark at Dalia point in Rangpur. The Dharla river was flowing 3.0 cm above the danger level at Kurigram.
The Jamuna was flowing 60 cm and 17 cm above the danger marks at Sirajganj and Aricha points.
The Padma was flowing 46 cm and 23 cm above the danger levels at Goalanda and Bhagyakul points.
The Surma was flowing 105 cm, 15 cm and 83 cm above the danger marks at Kanaighat, Sylhet and Sunamganj points.
The Someshawari was flowing 148 cm above the danger mark Friday morning, though the flow receded a little.
The Gumti was flowing 49 cm above the danger mark at Debidwar point. The Khowai was flowing 90 cm above the danger mark at Habiganj point.
The Khowai at Habiganj, the Dharla at Kurigram and the Kapotaksho at Jhikargachha rose further.
The road connecting the Nalitabari bridge on Sirajganj-Kazipur Road was washed away Friday morning.
Fisheries and Agriculture Adviser CS Karim visited the spot at 11:00 am and instructed the authorities to quickly repair the damage.
The army and the police joined hands in the repair there.
Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Khalil said the waters breached the Brahmaputra flood control embankment Thursday at Palashpur under Kazipur upazila, washing away the approach road of Nalitabari bridge.
More areas in the districts of Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur and Shariatpur, and Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas of Dhaka district are also likely to be inundated.
Small rivers surrounding Dhaka and Narayanganj continued to rise and are likely to approach danger levels by next 2/3 days except the Buriganga which was flowing 125 cm below the danger level Friday morning.
The met office said most places of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions and places of Barisal and Khulna divisions might see light to medium rainfall accompanied with squally to gusty winds.
Influenced by the monsoon, places of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Barisal divisions might also have heavy to torrential rainfall.
