Mosharraf laid to rest

Renowned businessman-cum-politician Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain was laid to eternal rest in the capital's Banani Graveyard on Tuesday afternoon.

The former BNP lawmaker from Feni-3 constituency breathed his last at a hospital in the city on Monday evening at the age of 74.

He was buried after his fourth namaz-e-janaza on the premises of Gulshan Azad Mosque at around 6:30pm.  

Apart from his family members, friends and well-wishers, hundreds of people, including business leaders, were present during the burial.

Mosharraf Hossain's body was taken to BNP central office at about 10:30am, where party leaders and activists showed their last respect by placing wreaths on his coffin draped with party flag.

Senior BNP leaders, led by its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, placed wreaths on the coffin.

Fakhrul, BNP standing committee members MK Anwar, Mirza Abbas and Nazrul Islam Khan, joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and chairperson's adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu, among others, joined the janaza.

Mr Mosharraf, a member of the advisory council to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, was suffering from various heart-related complications for long, and took treatment in Singapore for a couple of occasions.

He left behind three daughters, wife and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

His second janaza was held at South Plaza of the Jatiyo Sangsad (JS) at around 11:00am. Chief Whip ASM Firoz, AL leaders Shamsul Haq Tuku and Joynal Hazari, BNP leaders Abdul Moyeen Khan, Abdul Awal Mintoo, Osman Farroque, Barkatullah Bulu, Zainul Abedin Farroque and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee as well as some government officials, among others, joined it.

Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, on behalf of the Speaker, and ASM Firoz, on behalf of the JS, also paid homage to the ex-lawmaker by placing wreaths.

Later, Mr Mosharraf's body was flown to his village home at Sonagazi in Feni. There his third namaz-e-janaza was held on Pilot High School ground at about 2:30pm. People from all walks of the society took part in the janaza after Zohr prayer.

Mosharraf Hossain was also the former president of Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

He contributed a lot to flourishing local ready-made garment (RMG) industry, and sending Bangladeshi workers to various overseas destinations.

Mr Mosharraf was one of the sponsor directors of the International Publications Limited (IPL), the owning company of the Financial Express (FE).   

He had been involved in various political and social activities since long, and got actively engaged in politics in 1995. He was elected lawmaker for the first time in 1996. Later, he was elected MP for two consecutive terms in 2001 and 2008.

Mosharraf Hossain had served as chairman and member of three parliamentary standing committees on Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts, Ministry of Information, and Ministry of Labour.

Meanwhile, various quarters, including bankers, apparel makers and politicians, have condoled his death.

In a condolence message, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) expressed its deep shock and grief at the death of Mosharraf Hosssin, who was a sponsor and former director of the bank.    

IBBL chairman Abu Nasser Muhammad Abduz Zaher and managing director Mohammad Abdul Mannan prayed for salvation of the departed soul.

Mentioning Mr Mosharraf a pioneer in establishing IBBL, the bank's chairman said contribution of the departed business personality to bring the bank to its current state is worth mentionable.

"We will deeply feel his absence," he said.

The IBBL managing director said uplifting the country's RMG industry to the international standard through financing from IBBL was the outcome of his industrious effort.

"He had a valuable contribution to expanding the country's trade and industry as well as realising remittance through sending Bangladeshi workers to various overseas job markets," he added.

In another message, BGMEA said it is deeply grieved at the sad demise of Mosharraf Hossain, former president of the organisation and managing director of York Group.

"A vacuum is created in the country's trade and industry arena. May the Almighty grant the members of his family enough strength and courage to bear the loss," it said.

Sonagazi Upazila chairman Z M Kamrul Anam also expressed his shock at the sudden death of the business personality.
