Mufti Hannan charged with grenade attack on UK envoy

SYLHET, June 09 (bdnews24.com): The police Saturday pressed charges against banned Islamist outfit leader Mufti Hannan and three others for the May 21, 2004 grenade attack on British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet.
Three people died and another 100, including the envoy, were injured in the attack allegedly perpetrated by Harkatul Jihad at the shrine of Shahjalal in the heart of the city.
Assistant superintendent of police and investigation officer Munshi Atikur Rahman sub mitted the chargesheet before a Sylhet court at 11:30 am.
The other three accused are Harkatul Jihad activists Mafizur Rahman Mafiz, Sharif Shahedul Alam and Delwar Hossain Ripon.
The police dropped charges against Abu Jangal, also known as Mufti Moyeen and Ahsan Ullah Kajol, as Jangal remains untraced while Moyeen is dead, Rahman said.
Moyeen has been charged with leading the attack and Hannan with supplying explosives.
The court inspector accepted the chargesheet and told the news agency that the court would hear the charges today (Sunday).
