Two incidents of mugging in the capital on Friday claimed two lives, including a woman who was run over by the car used by muggers while snatching her purse.
In the other incident snatchers knifed a man to death.
The victim of the purse snatching incident was Helena Begum, an employee of a hospital in the city's Green Road area, said police inspector Md Parvez Islam.
According to him, Begum arrived in Dhaka with her husband Monirul Islam after vacationing in Barisal.
The couple took a bus from Sadarghat and got off at the stop near Dhanmondi Road 7.
As soon as they were crossing the road, the muggers' car approached and snatched Begum's purse, said the police officer citing the victim's husband.
"Helena fell on the ground when her purse was snatched and the car ran over her," said Inspector Parvez.
The muggers left the place keeping her seriously injured.
Helena was brought to Green Life Hospital in the capital where the attending doctor declared her dead.
the police officer said they launched investigation into the matter.
Last month, a 5-month-old infant died after falling from a moving rickshaw in Dhaka's Doyaganj, when muggers attempted to snatch the mother's purse.
In the other incident Ibrahim (33) knifed to death by snatchers near the city's Sayedabad rail gate under Jatrabari police station.
Son of late Bazlur Rahman, Ibrahim who had been involved with workshop business hailed from Sonadanga of Khulna.
Ibrahim reached the Sayedabad bus terminal from outside the capital in the early morning.
He was stabbed severely by the muggers as he tried to resist them from snatching away his belongings.
He was first rushed to the nearby Salahuddin Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the attending doctor declared him dead at around 6:00 am.
Separate cases were filed with the concerned police stations.
