Muhith hints at abolition of PSI system

CHITTAGONG, Aug 18: Finance Minister AMA Muhith said today the government is attaching more importance to keeping the market economy undisturbed, rather than earning only revenue.
He said that the country would lose, if the luxurious cars are not imported. "Rather, we could save our wealth," he added.
"The pre-shipment inspection (PSI) is a harmful system and the government is considering ways to abolish the PSI system by the end of this year," the finance minister said.
He was exchanging views with the customs officials at Chittagong Customs House on the second day of his three-day visit to the port city.
Earlier, he visited the prime sea port and inspected the container scanning operations.
In the evening, the finance minister sat with the income tax officials of Chittagong region at Agrabad. The tax officials apprised him about the tax collection scenario and said that they exceeded the target of collecting income tax set by the National Board of Revenue in the last fiscal year.
The minister emphasised that the tax payers should never be put to any kind of harassment as they were contributing a lot to the economic advancement of the country.
He stated that the government was seriously considering expansion of the tax-net to the upazila level.
