President Md Zillur Rahman has appointed Justice Md Mozzammel Hossain, a senior judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice, an official handout said Wednesday, report agencies.
Justice Hossain, the 20th Chief Justice of the country, will assume the office on May 18.
"A circular in this connection has been issued Wednesday," the law ministry's public relations officer Mizanur Rahman told newsmen.
Current chief justice A B M Khairul Haque is going on mandatory retirement on May 17.
Justice Muzammel supersedes his senior colleague Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman.
Opposition BNP has long been criticising the government for violating seniority in appointing the chief justice. Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (BSCBA) president Khandaker Mahbub Hossain on April 27 had threatened to stage protests in such an event.
He claimed the government was considering Justice Muzammel, instead of Justice Mominur, because of its political ambitions.
There is a strong possibility that Justice Muzammel will head the next caretaker government depending on his tenure.
