Detained former Telecommunications Minister and Awami League (AL) leader Mohammad Nasim was Monday sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in a graft case, as a purge against high-profile corruption suspects has been underway, reports UNB.
Nasim's wife, Laila Arzuman Banu, tried in absentia, was also jailed for three years for aiding and abetting her husband in acquiring wealth "by dishonest means".
A special court set up to try the big-shot corrupt delivered the judgment convicting the couple. Judge M Foriz Alam delivered the verdict after examining the prosecution witnesses and records.
The court also fined Nasim Tk 1.0 million (10 lakh), in default he has to suffer six more months in jail. His wife was fined Tk 0.1 million (1.0 lakh) or suffer one month more in prison.
Besides, the court ordered confiscation of Nasim's wealth worth Tk 12.6 million (1.26 crore), found "disproportionate to his known sources of income", to the state coffers.
On March 21, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Nasim, a front-ranking leader of the AL, and his wife with Dhanmondi police station for furnishing 'false information' in their wealth statements submitted to the ACC.
In the case, the ACC alleged that the couple, in their wealth statements, 'concealed information' about their wealth which they amassed 'illegally'.
