The nation mourns assassination of Bangladesh's founding-father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today (Friday) as the government has arranged observance of the National Mourning Day at the state level this time around, reports UNB.
Back in 1975, a group of disgruntled army officers killed Bangabandhu along with most members of his family in the early hours of August 15 at his residence at Dhanmondi Road 32. Col (retd) Farooq Rahman and Col (retd) Abdur Rashid led the putsch that also overthrew the Mujib government. Bangabandhu's two daughters-Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana-survived the bloodbath as they were in Germany on that black night. During the Awami League rule, the killers of Bangabandhu were tried. The trial ended in death sentences to the assassins. However, the sentences are yet to be executed. On August 07, 2007, the murder-case hearing resumed in the higher court after 6 years.
The incumbent caretaker government recognised the National Mourning Day and the Public Holiday on August 15 following a High Court judgment. The previous BNP-led alliance government had cancelled the mourning day introduced by the Awami League government in 1996.
The national flag will fly half-mast at all government and semi-government offices to show respects to the slain leader on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of his assassination. President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed would place wreath at the graveyard of Bangabandhu at Tungipara this morning and offer fateha.
Awami League has chalked out a two-day programme from Thursday to mark the death anniversary of Bangabandhu. Party leaders and activists led by presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury placed wreath and offered fateha at Bangabandhu's graveyard at Tungipara.
National and party flags will be hoisted half-mast and black flags will also be hoisted at Bangabandhu Bhaban and all the party offices at 6 am today.
The leaders and activists will place wreath at the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bhaban at about 8.0 am.
At Banani graveyard, wreath will also be placed on the graves of all those who were killed with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975 at 8.30am.
Other programmes include destitute feeding, milad mehfil and prayer at all religious institutions.
Acting General Secretary of the party Syed Ashraful Islam in a statement called upon the countrymen, including leaders, activists and supporters, to observe the mourning day 'in a befitting manner.'
