Nation mourns death of army officers in BDR carnage

The nation Friday mourned the deaths of 57 talented and all-round army officers who were brutally killed by some disgruntled and unruly members of Bangladesh Rifles (now renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh) in the BDR headquarters at Pilkhana in the city on February 25-26 in 2009, report agencies.
On the occasion of the second anniversary of the BDR carnage, President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the martyrs of BDR carnage as their representatives placed wreaths at a memorial of the martyred military officials at Banani Army Graveyard in the city in the morning.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) chalked out programmes marking the Pilkhana tragedy that also saw the massacre of 17 more people including two family members of the slain army officers, one retried army officer and a soldier.
Besides, different political and socio-cultural organisations, including Awami League, drew up various programmes on the occasion.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at graves of the martyred army officers, Khatme Quran, milad and doa mahfil and discussion meetings.
On behalf of the President, Squadron Leader Md Shahidur Rahman first placed wreaths at the memorial, while Military Secretary to the Prime Minister, Brig Gen Md Salah Uddin Miyazi, laid wreaths on behalf of the Prime Minister.
