The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the time for submission of tax returns by both individuals and corporate taxpayers until February 16, 2025 and March 15, 2025 respectively.
The deadline for individual taxpayers was scheduled to expire on January 31, 2025 and that for corporate taxpayers was supposed to end on February 15, 2025.
The income-tax wing of the NBR has issued an order extending the deadline.
This year, around 35 per cent of the individual taxpayers have submitted tax returns online. Last year, it was only 10 per cent.
Taxpayers said the NBR's effort to popularise online tax return submission by simplifying the process and making online tax return mandatory for some taxpayers has paid off.
Until Thursday, some 1.3 million individual taxpayers submitted their returns online which was 0.5 million last year.
Nearly 3.5 million taxpayers submitted their returns until January 23, 2025. Of the taxpayers, 2.2 million individuals have submitted tax returns manually while some 9,048 companies submitted their tax returns.
Against the tax returns, the NBR has received Tk50 billion income tax which was Tk47.05 billion in the same period (until January 13, 2024) last year.
Overall tax return submission grew by 4.64 per cent while tax collection by Tk 6.45 billion.
Member income tax (Administration and human resource management) G M Abul Kalam Kaikobad said the deadline has been extended to facilitate taxpayers who are facing multiple challenges on economic front.
