The National Board of Revenue (NBR) may further extend the time for obtaining online Taxpayers Identification Number (TIN) following a steady rise in its registration.
The deadline for obtaining e-TIN is scheduled to expire on June 30.
NBR has found some 1.2 million taxpayers obtained online TIN so far. Of the taxpayers, some 0.2 million are new taxpayers.
A senior tax official said the board may propose a penalty for not complying with its directives on obtaining new TIN.
"A minimum penalty will be incorporated in the income tax law in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year in case of failure of obtaining TIN within the deadline," he said.
Before slapping the penalty, the revenue board may consider further extension of the deadline, he added.
The NBR has extended the time for obtaining e-TIN several times after introduction of the system from July 1, 2013 to facilitate taxpayers.
Officials said the old 12-digit TIN will not be accepted anywhere after expiry of the deadline for obtaining e-TIN.
Currently, TIN is mandatory for obtaining some 18 services from the government, state-owned and private entities.
NBR expects some 1.7 million taxpayers to obtain e-TIN by the deadline. There are some 3.8 million TIN-holders in the NBR database. Of them, NBR has found some 1.7 million have valid address and are traceable. Some 0.7 million of the existing valid TIN-holders are yet to obtain e-TIN by registering themselves online.
There will be no fake TIN under e-TIN system, as it is linked with the national identity card (NID) of the Election Commission. Each taxpayer will have only one TIN, like NID, under e-TIN system, officials said.
Taxmen have found that many people have more than one TINs that they opened on different purposes from different areas of the country.
NBR has launched an e-TIN service centre this month to provide TIN-related services to the people.
