NBR may take Khaleda's tax on untaxed money

August 06, 2007 00:00:00

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) may accept former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's tax on undeclared money, but official decision was not yet taken to end the dilemma over the payment faults.
Talking to UNB Sunday, a senior NBR official said they did not discuss anything about it on the day, although the revenue authority had a consultation with Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam.
"We were very much busy today and had a long meeting with the Finance Adviser at his office this afternoon," he said.
Asked any discussion with the Finance Adviser about the tax acceptance or rejection of the former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson, the NBR official said they did not have any discussion with him about the issue.
But, he said that the NBR would accept the tax of Khaleda Zia on her undeclared money after mending the procedural lapses.
On July 31, Khaleda through her representative deposited about Tk 3.387 million with Bangladesh Bank as tax on her undisclosed Tk 13.3 million as the government gave an opportunity to legalise undisclosed money.
The revenue board on June 04 offered the opportunity for two months (July 31) to the holders of undisclosed money, earned through legal means, to legalize such money with 5.0 per cent penalty in addition with normal tax. It has been extended till September 30 because of huge last-minute response from the taxpayers.
Under the clemency, the tax-dodgers having Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) will be able to whiten their incomes of the last six years, including the just-out fiscal 2006-07.
Tax-dodgers without having TIN will have to get the number. Eligible persons will be able to legalise their money by paying additional 5.0 per cent tax as penalty along with the normal tax base of that particular period.
Another report adds:Khaleda will submit her wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission today (Monday) afternoon, a day before the deadline.
Since the physical appearance is not mandatory, she is likely to submit her statement through her representative.
"Our target is to submit the statement between 3:30 and 4:30 tomorrow afternoon. We hope to submit it in due time," Khaleda's lawyer Ahmed Aazam Khan told reporters after meeting ACC secretary Mokhles ur
Rahman Sunday afternoon.
"If preparations cannot be completed for any reason, we'll submit the
statement at 10 am the following day (Tuesday)," he said.
Aazam said so far the value of the former Prime Minister's assets had reached over Tk 35 million.
