A new species of butterfly (flat white yellow-breasted) has been identified by Prof Dr Monwar Hossain, a teacher of Zoology Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU).

He disclosed this at a press conference held at the central cafeteria lounge of JU on Thursday afternoon.

Dr Monwar along with his team identified the new species of butterfly on October 26, 2014 at Supati of the Sundarbans during a tour under the project "IUCN Updating Species Red List of Bangladesh" funded by the World Bank.

"The length of the forewing of the butterfly is 35 - 45 mm. This butterfly prefers dense forest areas. Usually it rests under a leaf and is hardly seen on flowers. This species is also found in India, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The habits and ecology of this species are not well known in Bangladesh," Mr Monwar said at the press conference.

He also claimed that previously he recorded a total of 37 species of butterflies under 7 families during June 2011 to March 2013 in the Sundarbans mangrove forest of Bangladesh. The present finding added one more; raising the number to 38.

Renowned Indian butterfly expert Isaac Kehimkar who is working at Bombay Natural History Society and Eminent naturalist Sunny Chir who worked at Singapore Air Force reconfirmed this species, he added.
