‘Drug trader’ dies in ‘gunfight’

MYMENSINGH, July 03: A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Detective Branch (DB) of police in the Shambhuganj area of Sadar upazila early Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Bacchu alias Bhebel Bacchu. — UNB

Sugarcane growers exempt from road dev taxes

A bill was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday to repeal the existing 'Sugar Road Development Cess Ordinance', aiming to relieve the sugarcane growers of paying taxes for development of roads in sugar mill catchment areas. Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu piloted the bill. It was passed by voice vote. The original law was promulgated through an ordinance in 1960. — UNB
