NARAYANGANJ, Apr 29 (UNB): Supporters of abducted Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam blocked Dhaka-Chittagong highway for two and a half hours Tuesday, demanding the immediate rescue of Nazrul and his four associates.
Lawyers, meanwhile, demonstrated and boycotted the court here for the second consecutive day Tuesday to push for the immediate rescue of abducted lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker.
Seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and the lawyer, abducted from the city Sunday, could not be traced till Tuesday afternoon.
The agitated supporters of the ward councilor put barricades at 10 am and burned tyres at 10 spots from Mouchak to Sanarpar at Siddhirganj, disrupting traffic on the busy highway.
They also demanded the immediate arrest of councilor Nur Hossain and Siddirganj thana Awami league general secretary Yasin Miah for their suspected involvement in the abduction.
However, the blockaders removed the barricade at 12:30 pm when assistant superintendent of police of the district Bashir assured them that necessary action would be taken to find out the abducted people.
Siddhirganj thana officer-in-charge Abdul Matin said their 10 teams have been on a manhunt to rescue the abducted people and arrest the abductors.
Meanwhile, the lawyers held a protest meeting at Bar Association building and laid a siege to the Deputy Commissioner's office demanding the rescue of Chandar Kumer Sarker.
NCC panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his four associates were abducted by miscreants from Fatulla area of the city on Sunday.
The other victims are Nazrul's aides Tajul, Swapan, Liton and his private car driver.
Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted while they were going to Dhaka.
