With the second-highest daily toll and the highest daily cases of hospitalisation during the 24-hour period to Sunday morning, the dengue situation worsened in the country.
Nine patients died of dengue during the period across the country, bringing the death tally to 14 in the first five days of this month (October), according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
In the last 24 hours, 1,042 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh, marking the highest daily figure of the year.
Previously, the highest single-day admission was 845 on September 28.
However, due to government holidays on Friday and Saturday, data from districts outside Dhaka is often delayed, with full reports arriving on Sunday. As a result, Sunday typically sees a higher number of hospital admissions and deaths.
Of the 14 deceased, seven died in Dhaka South City Corporation, one in North City Corporation, and one in Chattogram.
Dhaka division topped the list of hospitalisations during the period with 520 patients, including 121 patients in Dhaka North City Corporation and 198 in Dhaka South City Corporation. Barishal division recorded 195 patient hospitalizations, while 104 were in Chattogram, 72 in Khulna, 41 in Mymensingh, 82 in Rajshahi, 23 in Rangpur, and five were admitted to different hospitals in Sylhet division, as stated in the press release issued by the DGHS.
During the same period, 998 patients were discharged from different hospitals across the country.
However, the total dengue cases since January 2025 to date are 49,907, with a total of 2,012 deaths, according to DG Health.
Last year, the total number of cases rose to 101,214, with 575 deaths from the dengue disease reported, the statement added.
