No major incident during Thursday’s hartal hours

The second day of the 48-hour nationwide hartal, enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the death penalties awarded to its two leaders for war crimes, saw no major untoward incident till filing this report at 9:30 pm on Thursday, reports UNB.

The shutdown programme that began at 6am on Wednesday will end at 6am on Friday (today).

In the capital, activists of Jamaat and its student associate body Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession at Testuri Bazar of Tejgaon around 6 am.

When police chased the Jamaat and Shibir men, they fled the scene after burning their banner.

Vehicular movement was a bit thinner than the usual in the morning, though no long-route buses were seen to leave or enter the city.Long-route bus services also remained suspended in most of the districts across the country.

Necessary policemen remained deployed at important points to fend off any untoward situation.

The first day of the 48-hour nationwide hartal passed off amid poor response on Wednesday.

No major incident of violence was reported from any part of the country, including the capital Dhaka, as of 8pm on Wednesday.

On Sunday, the Islamic party announced the 24-hour strike for Thursday protesting the capital punishment to its policymaker Mir Quasem Ali for war crimes.
