National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has said that the order related to the July National Charter must be given by Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.

He also said that there would be no "note of dissent" in the July National Charter.

He made these remarks while speaking at an event held at the Poet Shamsur Rahman Auditorium of Bangla Academy on Friday, marking launching of the University Teachers Forum (UTF).

Nahid Islam said, "There will be no 'note of dissent' in the July Charter. Whatever consensus has been reached will be finalised by the people. If the people want, those decisions will be implemented."

Expressing hope that a national election would be held under the legal framework of the July Charter, Nahid Islam added, "We will move Bangladesh forward by upholding the aspirations of the 2024 mass uprising."

He further said that all participants of the July uprising should have representation in the next parliament, which will also function as a Constitution Reform Council.

"That parliament will work toward drafting a new constitution. Teachers must play a vital role in this process, and NCP will ensure their participation," Nahid Islam said.

The NCP leader also stated that the upcoming parliament and the reform council would work inclusively with youth, teachers, religious scholars, women, minorities, and professionals from all walks of life to implement the July Charter.

He reiterated that their immediate demand is a referendum and that Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus must be entrusted with issuing the order of the July Charter.

During the event, the central convening committee of UTF was announced, with Dhaka University Professor Md. Sirajul Islam charged as convener and Dhaka International University Professor Shamim Hamidi as member secretary. The UTF declaration was read out by Professor Sirajul Islam, and several university teachers also delivered speeches at the programme.

Thanking teachers for their contribution to the July uprising, Nahid Islam said that over the past 16 years promotions had been granted on the basis of party affiliation.

"A fascist structure still exists in Bangladesh. Fascism cannot be eradicated without a change in individual and social thinking," he observed.

He added that to tackle unemployment, the education sector must be prioritised and reformed first. "Unless we are able to thoroughly reform and reshape the education system, fundamental change in the state is not possible. The government promised radical change in the education system but has failed. Even if they have failed, we will continue the struggle."
