Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) is going to postpone polling for the parliamentary election in Noakhali-1 constituency following the death of Nurul Islam, one of the candidates for the seat.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda Thursday said according to the electoral law, the election procedure for the constituency would be rescheduled and announced soon. The CEC said this at the EC Secretariat in the afternoon when his attention was drawn to the death of Nurul Islam. Replying to a question Dr Huda said, "Everything in this regard would be informed later."
Earlier, Nurul Islam suffered severe burn injuries while his son burnt to death, as their apartment house went up in flames late Tuesday night in the capital's Lalmatia area.
He was rushed to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and then shifted to the CMH, where he had been kept on life-support system.
The sources said the fire originated from electric short circuit at about 3:45am when the father and the son were fast asleep in their residence on the fourth floor of the multistory building at Lalmatia Imperial Garden. Nurul Islam's son, Tomohor Islam alias Puchi, died instantly.
His party is a component of the Awami League-led grand alliance, one of the power contenders in the December 29 general election being arranged against the backdrop of turmoil in the country's political arena following the 1/11 changeover.
