Obaidul Hassan appointed Chief Justice


Justice Obaidul Hassan, a senior judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, has been appointed Chief Justice (CJ) of Bangladesh.
The President appointed him as per the article 95(1) of the Constitution, said a notification issued by the law ministry on Tuesday. The appointment will come into effect after his taking oath.
The incumbent Chief Justice, Hasan Foez Siddique, will retire on September 25 as he completes his 67 years of age, the age limit of a Supreme Court judge, on the day.
Justice Obaidul Hassan, who was born on January 11, 1959, is going to be the 24th Chief Justice of the country.
He obtained BSS (Hons.) and MSS (Economics) and LLB from the University of Dhaka.
He was enrolled as an Advocate of the District Court, the High Court Division and the Appellate Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court on March 18 in 1986, October 18 in 1988 and August 15 in 2005 respectively.
He was elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court Division on June 30 in 2009 and appointed Judge of the same division on June 6 in 2011.
He worked as Member and Chairman respectively of the International Crimes Tribunal (BD)-2 during March 23 in 2012 to December 12 in 2012, and December 13 in 2012 to September 15 in 2015.
He delivered as many as 11 (eleven) judgments with fellow members in the International Crimes Tribunal(BD)-2.
He was elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on September 3 in 2020. He delivered numerous judgments including the judgment on Arpita Sompotti Ain, and appointment of Judges to the High Court Division.
He participated in an international conference held in Hong Kong (1991), participated in a training programme namely "Judicial Governance Programme" held in Singapore in July 2015.
He attended an International Conference on "International Crimes/State Crimes" held in Buenos Ayres, Argentina, in August 2015.
He also attended a view-exchange programme with the Judges of International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the Hague, The Netherlands, in August 2015.
He visited China, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Dubai and Turkey.
