One dies of Covid-19, 294 more contract dengue

The country recorded one Covid-19 death and 294 new dengue cases in the 24 hours to Saturday morning, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest Covid fatality brought the virus-related death toll this year to 23. Six new infections were also confirmed during the reporting period. A total of 239 samples were tested, yielding a positivity rate of 2.51 per cent, the DGHS said in a statement.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the cumulative Covid-19 death toll has reached 29,523. The country detected its first Covid-19 case on March 8, 2020, and recorded the first death from the virus 10 days later.

Meanwhile, dengue cases continued to climb, with 294 people hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease in the same 24-hour window. The total number of confirmed cases this year rose to 11,954, while the death toll remained unchanged at 45.

Barishal Division, excluding the city corporation areas, once again reported the highest number of new infections, with 126 fresh cases recorded.
