One killed, 30 hurt as garment workers clash in Gazipur

GAZIPUR, Mar 7 (UNB): A shop-owner was killed and 30 other were injured as garment workers clashed with terror and police at Gorgoria in Sreepur here Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Saiful, a shop-owner of the area.
Local sources said 133 retrenched workers of Pandora Garments had staged demonstrations for reinstating them for the last few days.
When they resumed demonstration in the morning, the garment owners along with some local people attacked the workers, triggering a clash that left at least 30 people wounded, including cops.
Among the injured, Saiful died on way to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Amid the troubles, the agitated garments workers ran riot ransacking their factory and some adjoining shops.
Later the protesters put barricades on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, halting traffic on the busy route for two and a half hours.
Additional police were deployed in the area to avert further flare-ups.
As the death news spread, local traders and villagers also got furious and took to the street. They held a protest meeting at CNB bazaar bus-stand.
