FE Report
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Thursday relaxed the operation of a frozen bank account held by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to enable her pay Tk 0.7 million as income tax.
The date of filing individuals tax return will expire on October 31.
The NBR has approved withdrawal of the amount from the frozen account of Sheikh Hasina as per the request of her lawyer.
The former prime minister has conveyed her desire to pay tax worth Tk 0.7 million (7.0 lakh) for the current fiscal.
On her behalf, tax lawyer Khandaker Moniruzzaman, sought relaxation of an account, held by Sheikh Hasina, with Sonali bank of Sangsad Bhaban Branch to withdraw the cash for payment of tax.
The NBR, in August, froze all the bank accounts and seized saving certificates of the former prime minister and her family members to investigate discrepancies between their actual wealth and tax returns.
The board has relaxed the frozen accounts only for withdrawal of the amount for payment of tax as its prime objective of any drive is to realise tax, a NBR source said.
The board is also initiating a move to realise tax applicable for the properties, seized by the government, he added.
