Ousted CJ in Pakistan urges defiance

ISLAMABAD, Nov 6 (Agencies): In a telephone address to lawyers in Pakistan's capital, the ousted chief justice (CJ) of the Supreme Court urged the lawyers today to continue to defy the state of emergency imposed by the president, Pervez Musharraf.
In the second day of protests, police arrested 50 lawyers in the eastern city of Lahore and clashes broke out between hundreds of lawyers and Pakistani police in Multan.
Pakistan's Cabinet discussed Tuesday possibly delaying by up to three months crucial parliamentary elections after President Gen. Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency, a minister said.
"The issue of holding elections was discussed at length, and after attending the Cabinet meeting I feel that the elections may be delayed by two months," the minister told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
"There will not be a delay of elections for longer than three months." "There is no final decision," he said.
Western allies of Pakistan, including the United States - critical of Musharraf's decision Saturday to declare a state of emergency that suspended the constitution - are urging him to hold the elections by mid-January as originally planned.
Ousted Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who is under virtual house arrest in Islamabad, told lawyers by mobile phone Tuesday. "Go to every corner of Pakistan and give the message that this is the time to sacrifice,"
It was unclear how chief justice, who is under house arrest, was able to gain access to a telephone.
