Outsiders take control of Islamia Eye Hospital

FE Report | March 15, 2009 00:00:00

A group of outsiders illegally occupied the country's reputed eye hospital -- Islamia Eye Hospital and M.A. Ispahani Institute of Ophthalmology in the city's Farmgate area Saturday.

Sources said some 40 to 50 outsiders backed by some physicians of the hospital entered the compound at about 11.30am and forcibly occupied the hospital halting the treatment of eye patients. They also assaulted Dr. Mazid Khan of the hospital.

Some physicians of the hospital including Dr. Shahriar Hasan, Dr. R.K. Chowdhury and Dr. Sayed Abul Hasan were involved in the incident and allegedly orchestrated the take-over of the hospital, sources said.

Local MP Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal came to the spot immediately after the incident. The outsiders held a meeting at the conference room of the hospital and announced a new committee with Asaduzzaman Khan MP as its chairman to run the hospital. But the MP expressed his reluctance to become the head of the committee.

When contacted, Asaduzzaman denied his involvement in the incident and said that he went there when a group of doctors and employees sought his help in resolving, what they said, some irregular practices in the hospital. He said the group alleged that the hospital authorities were resorting to repression and depriving them of their due facilities.

Asaduzzaman said he listened to the allegations of the doctors and employees and assured them of taking steps to resolve those after talking to the hospital authorities.

A case was lodged with Tejgaon thana in this connection.

Founded in October 1960 by renowned philanthropist and businessman, M A. Ispahani, Islamia Eye Hospital is a health facility offering comprehensive eye care and treatment. The hospital's services include comprehensive patient care, clinical research, sight enhancement and rehabilitation, community eye health education.
