Overall pass percentage up as HSC results published

The results of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations 2007 under country's nine education boards were published Sunday, showing a higher pass percentage of 65.60 and an increased number of GPA-5 graders, reports UNB.
The pass-percentage in the HSC examinations is 64.27 against last year's 62.22.
Additional secretary of the Education Ministry Abdul Awal Majumder, Dhaka Board Chairman Munirul Islam and the ministry's joint secretary Nazrul Islam presented the comparative statistics of the examinations and the outcome before reporters at the Dhaka Board office at about 12:30 pm on the day.
A total of 533,158 students sat for the examinations and 349,749 of them came out successful.
The pass percentage of female students is 64.42 and male a little higher at 66.48.
The board-wise pass percentages are as follows: Dhaka 70.77, Rajshahi 61.89, Comilla
65.75, Jessore 59.48, Chittagong 61.36, Barisal 55.63, Sylhet 65.98, Madrasah 74.31 and Technical Education 68.13..
The additional secretary said the number of GPA-5 scorers this year is 11,140, up by 2,490 compared to last year's 9,450. Of them, 2,829 male and 2,425 female candidates secured GPA-5 in Dhaka, 1,093 male and 725 female in Rajshahi, 309 male and 197 female in Comilla, 718 male and 473 female in Jessore, 446 male and 465 female in Chittagong, 120 male and 91 female in Barisal, 202 male and 112 female in Sylhet, 790 male and 140 female in Madrasah, and 3 male and 2 female in Technical Education Board.
A total of 90,422 candidates out of 127,767 passed in Dhaka Board, 63,193 out of 102,108 in Rajshahi, 30,295 out of 46,073 in Comilla, 46,478 out of 78,134 in Jessore, 22,759 out of 37,092 in Chittagong, 13,178 out of 23,689 in Barisal, 11,198 out of 16,972 in Sylhet, 38,363 out of 51,623 in Madrasah board and 33,863 out of 49,700 in Technical Education board.
Three institutions under Dhaka Board stayed at top on the basis of the numbers of GPA-5 scorers, pass percentages and appeared students. They are Notre Dame College, Viqarunnisa Noon College and Dhaka City College.These three institutions maintained their respective top-slot on the list of best institutions for three consecutive years.
According to bdnewsd24.com, GPA-5 scorers totalled 11,140 countrywide, up from 9,864 in 2006. Notre Dame College boasts the highest number of GPA-5 scorers, which is 825, among all the institutions.
Viqarunnissa Noon School and College followed with 493 GPA-5 scorers.
All students from 434 institutions under all the boardspassed the exams in 2007.
On the other hand, not a single student from 60 institutions could pass.
Excepting the madrasah and technical education boards, the average pass rates and the number of GPA-5 recipients increased for all the seven boards.
The number of expelled examinees also increased in 2007, he said.
Awal warned of stern measures against those institutions whose examinees failed without exception.
The number of such institutions stands at 60, which was 86 in 2006.
The number of institutions whose students passed the 2007 HSC examinations without a single case of failure rose to 434, up from 363 in 2006.
