Three more Bangladeshis now grace places in the Pandora Papers suspicion sheet published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) for possessing assets in tax havens.
The Pandora Papers, published Tuesday, names them as S Hedayet Ullah and S Rumi Saifullah, who invested in Transglobal Consulting in Hong Kong, and Shaheda Begum Shanti, who invested in an offshore company named Jas Limited.
It says Hedayet and Rumi are residents of Dhaka's Baridhara DOHS while Shanti lives in the Shahjalal area of Sylhet.
Pandora Papers is a publication of the ICIJ and dedicated to public interest. It is based on leaked data on persons suspected to be involved in buying and selling property, hiding assets away from tax and judicial authorities, making investments in offshore companies or banking portfolios, among other means, to seek financial secrecy havens.
"But it cannot be ascertained whether anyone named in Pandora Papers has involvement in any illicit activity," says the consortium of investigative journalists.
The ICIJ publishes final batch of Pandora Papers data on more than 9,000 offshore companies, trusts and foundations.
The Offshore Leaks Database spans five different leaks, and now includes information on offshore companies, foundations and trusts from seven offshore service providers from ICIJ's latest investigation into the use of tax havens.
Earlier, eight other Bangladeshis were named in the Pandora Papers in two batches.
Russia, the United Kingdom, Argentina, China, Brazil, Ukraine and Venezuela are among the countries with the largest number of beneficial owners hidden behind offshore entities in the Pandora Papers.
The ICIJ said it believes that providing this data to all for free help 'shine light on the offshore economy and, in many cases, the damage it causes'.
It makes clear that there are legitimate uses too for offshore companies, trusts and foundations, and the presence of a person or a company's name is not intended to suggest or imply that they have engaged in illegal or improper conduct.
