Pass rates in SSC exams decline

The results of Secondary School Certificate (SSC), Dakhil and SSC (Vocational) examinations 2007 were published Tuesday with a downward average pass-rate of 58.36 against 66.22 per cent last year (2006).
Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board has the top score with 65.87 percentage of pass while Dhaka Board 60.81, Rajshahi Board 59.18, Comilla Board 46.83, Jessore 60.87, Chittagong 57.94, Barisal 50.67, Sylhet Board 47.27 and Technical Education Board 51.08.
Education Secretary Md Momtazul Islam announced the results at a press conference at Dhaka Education Board office Tuesday. Additional Secretary AKM Abdul Awal Mojumder and Joint Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan of the education ministry and chairmen of the nine education boards were present at the press conference.
Earlier, they handed over the result sheets to the Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed at the latter's office. The CA expressed his deep satisfaction over the results.
A total of 32,646 examinees in SSC, Dakhil and SSC (Vocational) exams have secured the highest score of grade point average (GPA) 5 this year compared to 30,490 in 2006.
This year 25,732 examinees-9,439 from Dhaka Board, 6,910 from Rajshahi Board, 2,387 from Comilla Board, 2,329 from Jessore Board, 3,313 from Chittagong Board, 641 from Barisal Board and 713 from Sylhet Board-have obtained GPA-5 in the SSC examinations.
Besides, 6,889 Dakhil and 25 SSC (Vocational) examinees scored GPA-5 this year.
Like the previous years, schools in urban areas, particularly those in metropolitan cities, retained the highest number of GPA-5 category this year also.
Among the top ten GPA-5 securing schools, six are in the capital under the Dhaka Education Board, one in Comilla and two in Chittagong and one in Rajshahi.
Viqarunnisa Noon School has obtained the highest number of 564 GPA-5, followed by Ideal School and College with 527 GPA-5 like last year.
Monipur High School in Mirpur bagged 314 GPA-5 while Rajuk Uttara Model School and College 281.
Double Mooring Collegiate School and College in Chittagong is fifth in the list with 265 GPA-5 holders out of 395 examinees. Motijheel Model High School came up with 259 GPA-5.
Comilla Zila School secured seventh place by getting 255 GPA-5 scorers. They had a total of 387 examinees.
Dr Khastagir Govt Girls' High School in Chittagong is in the eighth place with 197 GPA-5 holders. They sent 309 students for the examinations.
The ninth position is taken by Bogra Cantonment Public School and College. This year their total examinees were 211 of which 179 secured GPA-5.
Dhaka Residential Model School and College is in the tenth place. They obtained 178 GPA-5 out of 309 examinees.
No examinees from 248 institutions across the country could figure well in the examinations. The number of such institutions was 193 in 2006.
The numbers of such institutions are 15 in Dhaka Board, 12 in Rajshahi Board, 3 in Comilla Board, 3 in Chittagong Board, 19 in Barisal Board, 3 in Sylhet Board, 165 in Madrasah Board and 28 in Technical Education Board.
A total of 10,24,537 students sat for this year's SSC, Dakhil and SSC (Vocational) examinations under the nine education boards of the country while 2,29,263 under the Dhaka Board, 2,10,866 under the Rajshahi Board, 89,803 under the Comilla Board, 1,16,812 under the Jessore Board, 61,961 under the Chittagong Board, 51,158 under the Barisal Board, 32,302 under the Sylhet Board, 1,67,735 under the Madrasah Board and 64,637 under the Technical Education Board.
Of the total, 5,97,955 examinees came out successful. Out of the successful examinees, the number of male is 3,35,443 and that of female 2,62,512.
Some 774 institutions around the country have secured 100 per cent pass in the examinations. Of them, 52 are under Dhaka Board, 39 under Rajshahi Board, 6 under Comilla Board, 13 under Jessore Board, 21 under Chittagong Board, 16 under Barisal Board, 7 under Sylhet Board, 611 under Madrasah Board and 9 under Technical Education Board. The figure was 1,429 last year.
