The 9th International Plastic Fair 2014 will begins in the city Thursday (February 20) with especial focus on the recycling plastic industry in the country.
Around 300 companies at home and abroad will participate in the 4-day fair to be organised by the Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) and Chan Chao International Co Ltd of Taiwan. This was announced at a press conference on Tuesday.
"One of the main focuses of the international plastic expo will be to patronise the recycling industry in Bangladesh as the local waste plastic industry is yet to be fully organised BPGMEA president Jashim Uddin told the press conference.
Amir Hossain Amu, Minister for Industries will open the fair at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) while Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith will be the chief guest.
He said plastic recycling products have huge potentiality to earn foreign currency. "But it is very hard to ensure quality of the products due to lack of proper collection system of waste plastics in the country"
The association chief demanded policy support by the government in this regard.
With the holding of fair, the industry is getting new products and technologies each year, said Mr Jashim. Around 300 companies which will participate in the expo 210 are foreign.
The fair will display plastic products as well as machineries. A large number of foreign companies will attend the fair including China, India Pakistan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, the USA, Vietnam, UAE, Singapore, Italy, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Although the plastic manufacturers got spot orders of around US$ 15.0 billion last year, it is not their main aim. The main objective is to familiaries the consumers with plastic products and technology, the BPGMEA leader said.
He also termed the suspension of Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facilities an unjust decision by the US government as the manufacturers of plastic and other products who exported to the US have no fault.
Around 20 per cent growth rate has been continuing since last 10 years in the sector. Some 30 to 35 companies are exporting products of around 3,000 plastic factories.
Ex BPGMEA presidents Yusuf Ashraf and Ferdous Wahid, senior vice president Gias Uddin Ahmed and general secretary K M Iqbal Hossain, among others, were present in the press meet.
