Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sunday asked the officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to inquire into abnormal growth of wealth of certain quarters, reports UNB.
"You have to find out the source of their income and how much money they pay as taxes," she told the NBR officials during a meeting at her office (PMO).
Hasina said a group of people earned billions of taka overnight and directed the tax officials to look into this matter.
She said some people often buy luxurious cars and
houses. "You have to identify those people and you should ask them whether they pay their taxes properly," she said.
The Prime Minister said all have to be accountable about their income and expenditure, and through this transparency of the people about payment of taxes would be ensured.
PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting.
The Prime Minister instructed the NBR officials to motivate the people for paying tax regularly.
She said payment of taxes regularly would ensure the implementation of development programmes as well as this practice would reduce the dependence on others.
Hasina observed that dependence on others hinders the government to independent decisions for the welfare of the people.
She said if the people properly pay their taxes, it would be a great help for the government to reduce the interference of donor countries and organisations into the day to day affair.
