Police dispersed on Tuesday university teachers, guardians and activists of different left-leaning political parties as they tried to gather at the Jatiya Press Club to hold a rally protesting the attacks on the leaders and activists of the quota reform movement.

The leaders and activists of the Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council came under attack by the Bangladesh Chhattra League (BCL) men, reports UNB.

The law enforcers also picked up Prof Rehnuma Ahmed of Jagangirnagar University and former Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) president Baki Billah at that time. But, they were released later.

Witnesses said around 100 demonstrators, including teachers of different universities, under the banner of 'Concerned guardians and citizens' tried to gather at the Jatiya Press Club since afternoon to begin their scheduled rally at 4.00pm.

However, police dispersed them, saying they had no permission for holding the programme which led to a scuffle between the law enforcers and demonstrators.

At that time, police allegedly assaulted Dhaka University teacher Prof Fahmidul Haq and Ganosanghati Andolon convener Zonayed Saki.

They also picked up Prof Rehnuma Ahmed and Baki Billah from the spot. They were released in the evening.

Fahmidul Haq said, "Police misbehaved with me even after knowing my identity. I and Rehnuma Ahmed got on the van after police arrested Baki Billah and wanted to talk to the police officer. The officer accused me of damaging the police vehicle and tried to arrest me, too. But the other demonstrators resisted their attempt."

Meanwhile, a group of teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Tuesday formed a barefoot human chain in the campus protesting the recent attacks on students and activists of quota reform movement.

They formed the human chain led by RU Economics Department Assistant Professor Farid Khan from 11am to 12pm in front of the grave of Dr Zoha in the campus.

Earlier on Monday, Prof Farid on his Facebook page called upon all teachers and students to come forward and join the human chain barefoot protesting attacks and harassments of the students.

Another report says: A joint convener of the quota reform movement Faruk Hassan was sent to jail by a Dhaka court on Tuesday in a police assault case, which was filed with Shahbagh police station in April.

He went on traceless allegedly after being picked up by Bangladesh Chhatra League men from central Shaheed Minar of Dhaka University on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman told the news agency that Faruk Hassan was shown arrested in a police assault case of Shahbagh police station on Monday night. The case is being investigated by Detective Branch of the DMP, he added.
