Dialogue between the Election Commission (EC) and political parties on the draft of electoral law reforms is not taking place now as the politicians appeared lukewarm about the EC-offered informal talk, reports UNB.
"We will listen if anyone (politician) wants to come (to discuss the draft)… But we came to know (through media) that some (politicians) are telling they don't want to come alone… So we have to wait for some time," Election Commissioner M Sohul Hussain told reporters Sunday.
However, Sohul said the politicians didn't make it clear what they meant by 'alone'. It was unclear if all the political parties want to come together or whether it is only one or a group of nominated representatives on behalf of a particular party.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda and two advisers had said the political parties could informally meet with them to discuss the draft reform proposals of concerned electoral laws.
"First, the political parties have to shape themselves up as tussle is going within them," Sohul said, adding that the parties have to decide who are to represent them in the discussion with the EC.
He said the politicians were also telling that there is no benefit of talking with the EC informally, as they cannot share the outcome with their party members due to the ban on indoor politics.
"Yes, we are waiting… It won't be any problem if there would be a little bit delay," the Election Commissioner replied when asked if they were waiting for the lifting of the ban to hold the discussion.
They have already prepared the draft of concerned electoral laws and want to discuss it with the political parties, he added.
