Polls in 73 upazilas today

Elections to 73 upazila parishads will be held today (Monday) in the fifth phase of the fourth polls to this local government body. Voting will start at 8.00 am and continue till 4.00 pm without any break in these 73 upazilas in 35 districts, reports BSS.

Election Commissioner M Shahnewaz said the Election Commission (EC) completed all preparations for holding the polls in a free, fair and peaceful manner. Election materials have been sent to the polling centres.

Electioneering remained stopped in the upazilas since Saturday midnight. Restrictions were also imposed on vehicular movements. Today is public holiday in the areas concerned.

Army members have been deployed in the field as striking force. Besides, there are adequate members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police and ansar. Army will stay in the field in 73 upazilas for five days.

A total of 1,063 candidates are contesting the fifth phase upazila polls. Of them 364 are chairman candidates, 420 vice-chairman candidates, and 279 woman vice-chairman candidates.

The number of voters in 73 upazilas is 1,42,60,663. Of them 71,15,380 are male and 71,45,283 are female. They will cast their votes in 5,703 polling centres.
