Jute, fabric-made bags to be offered

FE REPORT | September 10, 2024 00:00:00

Single-use plastic bags are banned in the country's supershops for customer use with effect from October 1.

Adviser at the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Syeda Rizwana Hasan disclosed the information during a stakeholder meeting at the Secretariat on Monday.

Initially, the ban will be implemented near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Secretary at the ministry Dr. Farhina Ahmed chaired the meeting to develop an action plan for enforcing the ban on single-use plastic bags. Officials from relevant ministries were present.

Another stakeholder meeting will be held today to further discuss the matter.

Jute and fabric bags will be offered in all supershops as an alternative, allowing customers to purchase eco-friendly bags for carrying their purchases.

The upcoming ban on plastic shopping bags will be promoted through print and electronic media from September 15, the environment adviser, said further.

Representatives from the Ministry of Textiles and Jute will meet with supershop owners within a week to ensure the availability of alternative shopping bags.

The Department of Environment, in collaboration with the Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO), will host a fair for manufacturers of jute, textile bags, and other eco-friendly materials by September 30, where supershop owners and bag producers can discuss their needs and supplies.
