Port situation now normal

CHITTAGONG, Oct 17: Situation in Chittagong Port is becoming normal after deployment of the army personnel following workers' strike that halted the country's economic lifeline, coordination officer of the Chittagong Port Security Cell Major Shahriar Morshed told the media at a press briefing Sunday afternoon.
CPA secretary Syed Farhad Uddin was also present.
Morshed said the workers are doing their jobs spontaneously as they have handled 4498 TEUs container over the last 24 hours until 12.00 noon on Sunday.
"Seventy nine ships have anchored at the outer anchorage and 16 berths of the port. Workers are unloading cargo from 18 vessels out of 53 at the outer anchorage while loading and unloading in 16 vessels at the CCT, NCT and GCB berths are going on in full swing.
He further said that 246 army personnel have been deployed to help run the activities and for security reasons in 13 points of the port. Six teams are engaged in regular patrol in the area, he added.
Major Morshed has said that the Security Cell will be briefing about the port every week from next Saturday.
