Power supply situation slightly improves

FE Report
The country's power supply situation slightly improved Wednesday evening with the inauguration of a new power plant at Ashuganj and resumption of operation of a tripped plant.
Electricity generation during daytime, however, deteriorated with the generation fall in some privately operated fuel-run power plants as oil delivery to the units was hampered due to strikes of river transport workers.
Electricity generation in the evening reached around 3750 megawatts (mw), up by 350mw from Tuesday, while the daytime electricity generation was hovering around 3350mw.
However, electricity demand was over 5500 mw in the country.
Resuming electricity generation from Ghorashal power plant helped increase supply of 100mw apart from the newly inaugurated 55mw plant at Ashuganj, a senior Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) official said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated operation of the gas-fired rental power plant at Ashuganj.
Ghorashal plant might add 95mw more Thursday to increase the overall electricity supply, the official said.
The Ghorashal plant tripped several days ago along with some big plants including Meghnaghat 450mw, Sidhhirganj 110mw, Rauzan 180mw and Ashuganj64 mw.
But only the Ghorashal power plant resumed operation until Wednesday.
On Wednesday, fall of electricity generation in furnace oil-run Khulna Power Company Ltd (KPCL) and Westmont worsened the electricity supply situation to a new level.
"The KPCL could generate only around 35 mw of electricity Wednesday compared to its pervious day's generation of 102mw, while electricity supply of Westmont fell by 33mw," said a power ministry official.
The load shedding continues to hamper production and businesses, and cause sufferings to the people in mid summer hot days.
