CHITTAGONG, Apr 19: Security has been beefed up in the Chittagong central jail after a group of prisoners held a foreign prisoner and two jail guards hostage in the prison cell on Sunday.
The government today formed a three-member probe committee with DIG (Prison) Fazlur Rahman as its head, it has been asked to submit its findings within three days. The committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs included Manir Ahmed, jail superintendent of Bandarban and Zakir Hussain, jailor of Laxmipur.
Earlier, DIG Fazlur Rahman visited Chittagong central jail and inspected some prison cells Sunday evening. He also visited the injured senior jail guard Abdul Jalil in Chittagong Medical College last night.
He held a series of meetings with the jail superintendent and officials of police administration today and yesterday. In the afternoon he told reporters that his team would submit the findings of the incident within three days.
But he declined to comment on the prisoners' unrest.
Deputy Commissioner of CMP Special Branch Shamsul Huq said a platoon of riot police was deployed in the jail last night and vigilance of the RAB strengthened in and around the central jail. Jail authorities said suddenly 11 prisoners of different cells held a Malaysian prisoner, Mehdi bin Hasan, hostage in the Padma Cell of ward no 14 of the jail at about 4.30pm. Responding to the security alarm senior jail guards Jalil and Nurul Islam entered the cell to rescue the hostage but they were beaten up by the prisoners.
Nurul Islam (50) later fell sick and was admitted to hospital where he died at night. The authority brought the situation under control by deploying additional law enforcers and putting 11 prisoners in solitary confinement.
