May 22, 2009 00:00:00

The high-powered government committee formed to investigate into the February 25-26 BDR carnage submitted Thursday its report to the home ministry nearly two and a half months after its constitution, reports BSS.
"We have prepared the report on the basis of what we saw, heard and understood, not led by any speculation," Chairman of the 12-member committee Anisuzzaman Khan told newsmen while handing over the report to Home Minister Sahara Khatun.
He said the 309-page report was prepared defying "many limitations" but everything it contained "is true" and mentioned in a neutral manner.
During the brief event of handing over the report, retired additional secretary Anisuzzaman Khan declined to elaborate the contents but said the committee was focused on "five major issues".
The committee was formed on March 3 this year and was initially asked to submit its report in seven days but the deadline was extended several times while a few more members were inducted later as it eventually comprised six senior defence officials and six civil servants including a police officer.
Speaking on the occasion, the home minister said the government was expected to made the report public soon to let the people know "who, why and how staged the mutiny."
She expected the report would help to a great extent the regular police investigation of the case by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to bring the carnage culprits to justice in line with the pledge of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The minister said the trial of the killers was expected to be launched soon after the submission of the charge sheet against the culprits.
State Minister for Home Affairs Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taz and the committee members were present on the occasion.
