Protectionism and sanctions, along with counter-sanctions, are damaging trade for countries like Bangladesh, said Prime Minister's Adviser on Private Industry and Investment Salman F Rahman.
"There is a concept that open markets would succeed and the best way for the world economy to prosper is through openness and open markets, but unfortunately we are now seeing many blocks bringing in protectionism, which is a growing trend and worrying for countries like Bangladesh," he said.
Salman F Rahman made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at the launching ceremony of BASIS America Desk in Dhaka on Sunday. US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D Haas was the special guest of the event.
The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) organised it. Mr Rahman said Bangladesh strongly supports open trade and the globalisation of trade.
"But we are seeing many sanctions and counter-sanctions in the face of the Russia-Ukraine war, which is definitely not contributing to open trade. On the contrary, it is creating a big hurdle for globalisation and open trade," he commented.
Bangladesh, as a developing country, must be cautious about this, said the PM's adviser.
Mr Rahman said Bangladesh has a very open and supportive policy for ICT exports. However, there is a need for constant learning and skill development to keep pace with the rapid change in the sector.
