Muslims in Bangladesh will commence the observance of Ramadan, a lunar month, marked by self-purification through fasting and abstinence, today (March 12).

The sighting of the moon on Monday confirmed the commencement of Ramadan.

Lailatul Qadr, the night of divine blessing and benediction, is scheduled for April 6, as decided during a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at the conference room of the Islamic Foundation (IF) at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Monday evening, according to a press release.

During this lunar month, Muslims are required to fast from dawn to dusk, fostering a sense of restraint and austerity.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extend greetings to the countrymen and the global Muslim Ummah as the holy month of Ramadan begins today.

In a message, President Shahabuddin emphasized the unique opportunity Ramadan provides to draw closer to the Almighty Allah and attain taqwa (fear of Allah). He urged individuals and society to reflect on the significance of fasting, which plays a vital role in fostering sympathy, amity, and brotherhood among all, irrespective of socio-economic status.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, highlighted the opportunity for self-rectification through self-restraint during this holy month. She emphasized the role of fasting in fostering sympathy, amity, and brotherhood among all members of society.

Ramadan, also known as Ramzan, is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a time when Muslims worldwide focus on prayers, fasting, giving charity, and religious devotion.

In observance of Ramadan, all government, semi-government, and private offices have arranged new office schedules.
