Record eight dengue deaths in a day

The dengue situation has worsened sharply as eight more people died of the mosquito-borne disease in last 24 hours until Monday morning.

It is the highest single-day dengue deaths of this year, taking this year's total death toll to 114.

At the same time, a record 1,589 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country taking the total cases to 22,467. Of the total cases, 14,617 were from Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

A total of 5,441 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 3347 were from Dhaka.

A total of 17,382 dengue patients have taken treatment in various public and private hospitals of the country since January till date, said the DGHS. Of them, 11,757 were from Dhaka.

Of the total admitted dengue patients, 16,912 made recovery and returned home, and of them, 12,263 were from Dhaka.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the highest in the history of the country. However, experts fear that the situation will worsen in August and September compared to July as the rainy season started late this year.

Meanwhile, in Chattogram, dengue cases have also been increasing day by day. Some 1,377 dengue cases were identified in the port city so far since January. The hospitals in the city are getting many dengue patients nowadays.

Professor Dr Mohammed Jashim Uddin of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) said people should be aware of dengue disease. He also put emphasis on the awareness, proper treatment and clean environment to control dengue.
